Imam Malik ibn Anas lived in Medina and compiled al-Muwatta, one of the earliest and most respected works combining prophetic narrations with the living practice of the people of Medina. The Maliki school gives weight to the consensus and custom of the city of the Prophet ﷺ (amal ahl al-Madina).
Malik's fiqh spread across North and West Africa, parts of the Gulf, and beyond. Imam al-Shafi'i studied with him and praised him in the highest terms.
